Indepth Review Of Shaving Soap

One of the keys to a great shave is the lubrication that you use. The whole point of shaving cream or shaving soap is to apply a thin layer of lubrication on your skin for the razor to slide across. But not everyone likes shaving cream and only a few really know about shaving soap. It is one of the lesser talked about shaving products.

There are a few brands of shaving soap that have been around for 50+ years and there is a good reason for it. It is not just because they are one of the few that are left, but it is because they make the best shaving soap there is.

A Tip on Glycerin Soaps: Glycerin soaps don’t lather the same way a bar of dove soap or shaving creams do. What you need to know is that it will require more vigorous mixing and small amounts of water added as needed. The best way to get a good lather is to make sure a lot of soap is coming off on your shaving brush in a tight fitting shaving mug. This will eventually whip in to your lather.

Here are 5 of the top brands of shaving soaps, in our opinion of course.

Colonel Conk Worlds Famous Shaving Soap
1. Colonel Conk World’s Famous Shaving Soap - This is a brand that you will see everywhere and definitely at the top of the list. This is a glycerin based soap which has a rum scent to it. It also contains good things for your skin like Vitamin E and avocado oil which are both great for healing and moisturizing. Its bay rum scent still lingers on your skin afterwards, so if you aren’t a fan of using aftershave you can still smell great without it. The original style is very inexpensive, roughly $4.50/bar, while the Colonel Ichabod Conk Lime is a bit more expensive, roughly $5/bar. The difference is the fragrance where the latter has a Lime smell with aloe vera rather than bay rum. Each bar comes in its own little container but I recommend that you use a mug so that you aren’t messing around with a lathered bar in such a tiny space.

Proraso Shaving Soap with Eucalyptus Oil and Menthol
2. Proraso Shaving Soap from Italy - This soap is made with eucalyptus and menthol. It leaves your skin feeling really refreshed without feeling buttery or oily. One of the great things about it is that they make one for normal skin types and one for sensitive skin. Since I’m a sensitive skin guy, this works out great. Many people who use disposable razors will tell you that this soap will give you a better shave. Just imagine how well it works with a straight razor! There are only 2 problems about this one. First is that for some people, they might find that the soap makes your face too slippery. And the second is that the menthol feeling can be too much. If you aren’t a fan of menthol, then either A) don’t buy this or B) use the sensitive skin version. It costs about $13 for a puck that should last up to a year for a regular shaver.

3. Tabac Original by Maurer and Wirtz - Any man who is in his 60’s or 70’s will be familiar with this brand.
Tabac Original By Maurer and Wirtz For Men
It was first established in 1959 and has been going strong every since. The price is extremely expensive, $17 for a puck, but it lasts a long time. If you were to buy the same amount in a can, you would spend a lot more money. The smell kind of reminds me of an old school barber shop for men but not as strong. When you have finished shaving it leaves your skin with a hydrated feel and not an oily one. This is definitely a shaving soap you should try. If you don’t like it, it will be easy to offer it to a friend or family member.

Omega Shaving Soap in a plastic bowl
4. Omega Shaving Soap - This is another shaving soap from Italy that comes in its own bowl. This soap is for men who don’t mind a strong menthol burning sensation on their skin. For some this will be extremely overpowering. However, if you have thick dense hair, then you will really notice how this softens the hairs for an easy shave. It has a nice mild smell and is very easy to whip to a good lather. It costs less than $10 for a 5oz plastic cup.

The Art Of Shaving Shaving Soap
5. Art of Shaving - The Art of Shaving comes in 4 different smells such as lavender, lemon, sandalwood, and an unscented one. This is probably the most expensive shaving soap you will ever buy. 1 soap puck will cost around $25. Before you die from shock, let me explain. This is a glycerin soap that contains coconut oil and other essential oils. This is something a lot of others don’t have. The soap itself works really well to make your hairs stand up and soften them at the same time. People with sensitive skin can use this easily and doesn’t have an over powering smell.
