Do You Need A Shaving Mug?

While many people are familiar with a can of shaving cream, there is an older alternative that many people still prefer. Shaving soap is still used today but it is mostly used by people who use a straight razor. But you don’t just lather it in your hands and apply it to your face. To use shaving soap properly you will need a shaving mug.

The shaving mug is where your soap is going to be located and where you will make a rich lather. Basically you will take a shaving brush that is slightly wet and rub it in a circle on top of the shaving soap. This will create a frothy lather. The more you do it the richer the froth you will get. If you don’t seem to be getting enough then you can add a little more water. Just make sure that you are using a glycerin shaving soap and not a regular bar that you would use for your body. You could do this in a regular bowl or a coffee mug, but there are special shaving mugs available that are more suited to this purpose.

The biggest problem I have with using a regular coffee mug is that the handle can break off quite easily.

I like to hold the mug by the handle while I am mixing and a regular coffee mug just can’t take that sort of stress. The shaving soap fits perfectly in the bottom without it sliding all over the place and the mug itself won’t chip or crack. They even say that it is indestructible. But look at the Black Edwin Rn46 Jagger shaving mug. This style of handle is made to be gripped on to while you are swirling and lathering the soap. The downside is that this mug is almost $40. But hey, it will probably be the last shaving mug you ever need!

If you use a regular mug and you get a chip or crack, stop using it. This is where bacteria and other harmful germs will hang out. Imagine if your shaving mug was gem ridden, you cut yourself shaving, and all of those germs in the soap got in to your cut? This mug is about $14 but definitely well worth it.

When it comes to shaving, I’m not that big on some of the deals that you will find on the internet. The Marvy Shaving Mug Gift Set is a great idea but the problem is that not everything in the set is ideal. The brush that it comes with is the biggest disappointment. It is very cheap and will shed hairs and make a mess. While the feeling of shaving like you were in the olden days is nostalgic, you still need to use quality products. On the other hand, the Burma set comes with a decent brush. I’m really not sure how they pull this off but the whole set is less than $5 on Amazon.

Some shaving mugs come with a small spout or a lid with a small opening. This is so that you can empty out any excess water from the mug that has a good lather so that you can work it more to make it rich and creamy. A rich and creamy lather will stick to your skin better and soften your hairs quicker. But if you use a shaving bowl then you may have a more difficult time because excess water is hard to remove.
