Shaving is something that men and women around the world are pressured to do by society. After all, you would
probably be fired from your job if you went to work with a scruffy face day after day. And while shaving cream or
another type of shaving lubrication is not required for electric razors, wet shaving requires it. But there is
something often overlooked by many people, and that is the shaving brush.
You can think of a shaving brush as on the same level as makeup brush that would use to apply blush and other
makeup. In the shaving world they are usually referred to as badger brushes as we will get in to later in this
article. Some men don't use them, especially if they are using shaving cream from a can. But for those who use a
straight razor, a shaving brush is often used along with shaving soap.
A shaving brushes main purpose is to apply a shaving lubrication to your face. When using a shaving soap, the
brush will allow you to create a froth that is rich and creamy. This will feel much better than a run of the mill
shaving cream from a can. One of the best features, in my opinion, is that you can make and apply this shaving
mixture to your face easily and with no mess on your hands, the tap, and or anywhere else that it is not meant to
be.
When you are using a shave brush it also exfoliates your skin and feels like a gentle massage. This is one of
the secrets to getting a better shave. The science behind it is that the brush softens the hair, helps them become
more erect, which makes the razors job much easier.
There are many types and styles of shaving brushes, so you should be aware of what you are buying before you
buy it. The shaving brush is made up of a handle on one end and the bristles on the other.
The hairs or bristles on a shaving brush are made from different materials. They can be fashioned from
nylon, horse hair, boar hair, and badger hair. The most common type of hairs used is boar hair, but badger hair
is one of the most respected since the density and feel of the hairs are much greater than any other type. But
a boar hair shaving brush might cost only $10 where a badger hair brush costs up to $1000. The handles are made
from plastic, wood, glass, metal, and sometimes more expensive and rare materials like ivory or ceramic.
However the most common brush setup is the boar hair with a plastic handle since they are relatively cheap and
do a good job at lathering shaving soap. But if you have the money, I would recommend that you find a good
badger hair shaving brush because it will perform for you much better than any other. Not to mention, it should
last a lot longer than the cheaper brushes.
Before you start whipping up a batch of shaving cream, I recommend that you soak for your brush in warm water
for 5 to 10 minutes. This serves two purposes. The first is that it will soften the bristles slightly and the
second is that it will allow the brush to retain more moisture while will in effect hold more shaving cream. Before
you start lathering your face, or whipping up shaving cream, you should remove any excess water that may be holding
on inside the brush.
If you are using shaving soap then you will need a shaving brush. Usually the shaving soap is put in the bottom
of a small bowl or mug. After you have soaked the shaving brush in water you can bring it directly to the shaving
soap bowl. This will give you enough moisture to work up lather. I recommend that be gentle when working up a later
or you risk breaking the bristles of the brush.
When you have your shaving cream or soap lathered up, you should apply a liberal amount to the brush.
Next you will apply the brush to your face and rub gently in circular motions. The idea is to gently exfoliate
and massage your skin while lubricating the surface of your skin. If you take a long time to shave then you may
want to apply it to one half of your face, shave, and then continue on the other side. You do not have to apply
your shaving cream to your whole face all at once.
When you are done shaving, you must make sure that you remove all of the shaving soap or shaving cream from it.
I will usually run it under a gentle stream of water and then soak it for a minute or two in clean water just to
make sure it is clean. You should never neglect your shaving brush and you should always keep it clean and dry.
Before you store it you should tap the handle with your hand to make sure there is no hidden water inside. I
recommend that you air dry your shaving brush to help avoid bacteria or other germs from breeding on your shaving
brush. You should have received a manual for it when you bought it so you should follow the manufacturer’s
suggestions on proper storage procedures.
You don't require a shaving brush, but it can make the world of difference when shaving. The small amount of
time you take in preparing for a shave is nothing compared to the benefits you will surely endure.
