A Classic Razor - Gillette Trac II

There is a lot of opinion on what the best razor is. But this is something that is specific to each person depending on their hair and skin types. I say skin type I mean whether it is sensitive, oily, or dry because each of those is a factor when shaving. Not to be confused with the Gillette Atra, the Trac II Plus is an older razor that is still a favorite among men who shave daily.

If you have problems with a razor cutting you when shaving then perhaps the Gillette Trac II can help. It only has two blades which seem to sit properly in the razor head. Many of the other razors that contain more than 2 razor blades seem to nick or cut my skin at least once, especially over those sensitive areas that have even the smallest of bumps.

In combination with the twin blades the Trac II contains a lubricating strip. However, I have to admit that I’m not impressed with any lubricating strip when it comes to razors. Even when using this one I feel like it should be doing more. It could be perhaps that I am too used to the Gillette Venus type razors because I often need to shave my legs for body building competitions.

For whatever reason it seems like the only place to buy the Gillette Trac II or Trac II plus is online at amazon.com. Perhaps retailers think that the newer multi bladed razors are better when in fact there is a huge demand for these older style shaving razors. Unfortunately, they must be in more demand than Gillette is willing to give out because they will cost twice as much per package as those newer ones. Another problem is that the actual handle is hard to come by, so if you have one, hang on to it. You will, more often than not, only find the cartridge refills.

One other issue I think worth mentioning is that the Trac II Plus cannot use the original Trac II razor cartridges. So it is important that you really understand which one you are ordering because a lot of sites, including Amazon.com, will have misleading pictures.

If you have thick hair that gets jammed in the other razors then this will offer some relief but not completely. For that I would recommend something like the Bic Metal Razor which only needs to be rinsed at the end of your shave. But over all I would consider the Gillette Trac II and the Trac 2 Plus a good razor for everyday use.
