Gillette Mach 3 Turbo Shaving Razor

One of Gillette’s most successful razor line in the past 10 years has been their Gillette Mach 3 line of razors. Not only do they have powerful advertisements for them, they actually do a good shaving job. Let’s look at the Gillette Mach 3 Turbo as I think this is a razor worth spending some time on.

The standard packaging for this razor is the grey and black handle with one razor cartridge attached and 2 extras. I never quite understood why there is so much packaging but they wanted to include a razor holder and a place to store the extra cartridges. It can be had for about $10 at your local store. The handle itself is straight with an ergonomic end to help you shave.

More importantly the razors themselves need to be examined. The razor head contains 3 blades that are designed to have less friction. This means that it will help prevent scraping, irritation, and hopefully cuts. I used this razor for 2 years and I have to say that that is an accurate statement. There is also a “skin guard” which helps lift up stubborn hairs but I’m not sure that it works because I never really noticed much of a difference compared to other Gillette 3 bladed razors.

I do have an issue with this razor. And that is the price! That’s right the price is the biggest downfall to this razor. While the initial purchase seems like a great deal I found that the replacement blades are where they get you. And not all of the Gillette Mach 3 Cartridges are interchangeable with the various styles like the original mach 3, Gillette M3 Power, turbo, vibrating, etc. The blades themselves do a good job with my dense hair but I end up having to replace them quite often. I should also mention that I do agree that the blades do a good job, they could be better. But I just don’t get it. Perhaps they used a poor metal for the razors, or maybe this was their plan, to have razor blades that get dull extremely quickly. So make a note here, you should always use a sharp razor blade to shave!

How will I know when the razor is dull? When you feel that it is pulling your hair or leaving you with a burning sensation then it is time to change the blades. The lubricating indicators are a joke in my opinion because they get wet, and when they are wet they degrade quickly.

I almost feel as if a cat is licking the side of my face when shaving with the mach 3 turbo. It doesn’t catch, or cause razor burn like many other razors are prone to. So the choice is between paying a lot of money for replacement razor cartridges for a good shave and paying a lot of money for a better razor set. If you aren’t satisfied with your current razor then I would recommend the Gillette Mach 3 Turbo.
