The Gillette Atra Razor Is A Classic Razor

It always amazes me at how older shaving razors are becoming more and more popular. I guess it is true that they
built things much better 30 years ago than they do today. The Gillette Atra razor is no exception.
There is a razor called the Gillette Vector which can handle specific Atra blades but the older heavier aluminum
handles make shaving a much more pleasant experience. The shave from these razors is very pleasant and supersedes
today’s 4 or 5 bladed razors by a mile.

This razor seems to be confused with the Gillette Trac II razor and I can
reaffirm you that they are in fact different. The Trac II blades came out in 1971 and soon after the Atra did. They
are quite similar. This is probably the reason for the confusion.
If you are searching for a razor handle that fit the Atra blades then you will have a difficult time. They don’t
sell them in the store and not even on www.amazon.com. I’m pretty sure that
Gillette has abandoned these razors. You can, however, find them on EBay. You will have to do some hunting because
some of the original handles are considered vintage and I’ve seen some auctions run up to $45 for just the handle
itself.
The Gillette Atra original blades are difficult to find as well and you will more often see the Atra Plus
cartridges instead. Unfortunately some of the original handles aren’t able to cater to these blades so you will
have to do some testing. Once you find a source then stock up because who knows when you will be able to get them
again.
The biggest attraction to these older razors is the fact that they have a nice weight to them, they give you a
very close shave, and virtually no cuts or razor burn when shaving correctly. Even when shaving properly with some
of the newer disposable razors you will end up cutting yourself because the
build quality just isn’t the same.
Shaving sucks! But it isn’t so bad when you use a razor that doesn’t cause problems and leaves you with a nice
smooth face. The Gillette Atra and the Gillette Atra Plus are definitely one to keep an eye out for.
